Annual Fairies and Fantasy Arts Award 2012
Selina likes to encourage aspiring artists, and holds an annual art competition. Each year, there will be a theme in which the artworks are to be created, and the winner will have their artwork featured here on Selina’s website, along with some other great prizes! We started small in 2009 with just one winner, but hope to build these awards into a much larger affair as years go on! All contestants artworks will be displayed in a gallery for the competition.
The 2012 theme is- “Literary Characters”.
With the release of my first novel, Memory’s Wake, I think it’s clear I have a love for books and stories. For the 2012 Fairies and Fantasy Art Awards theme, I’d love to see artists interpretations of famous literary characters. Importantly, please try to use characters from copyright free literature. This means old stories like fairy tales, Shakespearean characters, Alice in Wonderland, Lovecraft and so on. While characters from newer stories will be accepted, artists accept their own responsibility in terms of illustrating copyrighted materials.

I love your contests! The ‘prompts’ are so much fun. Sadly, I’m not much of an artist in the way of drawing/painting, but I do love thinking up fun photography sessions and manipulating them in photoshop! So much fun to create

Ooh, I’ve been thinking about starting to draw/sketch again. I found some of my artworks from high school when I was cleaning out my old wardrobe at my parents.
I need an “outlet” for all of my worldly frustrations!

What qualifies as famous? Should the character be readily recognized or would Melinette from Prince Naccisus and Princess Pontitilla qualify? (Sorry in advance for name spelling)
selinafenech
I don’t know them myself, but they would count.
Gabrielle
Would Disney characters like Cinderella or Repunzel work? Or are characters like these too famous??
selinafenech
You could do Cinderella or Rapunzel as their literary characters (eg, from Grims fairy tales), but I wouldn’t make them too close to Disney’s style of those characters or it could be considered copyright violation by Disney.

Hey Selina,
Hope all is well with you and your art.Your art is faerie lovely and inspirational.
I’m going to try and get myself to enter, especially since this is a theme I absolutely love, it’s me and some of the fantasy art I draw and sketch aside from other fantasy genres and wildlife, and something in art that I can and want to do for myself. Where I can make my own decisions, changes, revisions. Where as before I was no able to and the art competitions I entered where just art competitions I had to enter. I am a huge literature nerd when it comes to Grimm’s Brothers, Hans Christian Anderson and Madame Gabrielle de Villeneuve. The illustration is interpreted from my all time favorite fairytale literature.
Best Wishes,
Deborah
