I love to encourage aspiring artists which is why I hold this annual art competition. You can see previous years winners and competition details here to see what this is all about.

But now it’s the exciting time, time to announce the winners of the 2012 Fairies and Fantasy Art Awards!

The 2012 theme was- “Literary Characters”.

I received some fantastic entries and as always it was really hard to pick the winners!

Check out all the fabulous entries-

Award Categories and Prizes

Best Representation of Theme- This category was judged on the artwork that best represents the theme. The winner of this category will receive a cash prize of $50USD (paid via Paypal) to go towards some new art supplies, goodies from the Fairies and Fantasy website, or whatever they want!

The Winner- This is such a beautiful artwork and choice of character from Amanda Edling. Thomas the Rhymer- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_the_Rhymer

I chose this artwork as the winner for Best Representation of Theme as it just felt like an illustration from a story book.

Best Technical Work- This category winner was the artwork which exhibits a fine level of technical skill. The winner of this category will receive a cash prize of $50USD (paid via Paypal) to go towards some new art supplies, goodies from the Fairies and Fantasy website, or whatever they want!

The Winner- Andrea Schouten’s Tinkerbell was created on scratchboard, a technique of scratching away the black surface with a knife to show the white lines the artwork is created with. Andrea shows an amazing skill and detail with her technique in this work!

Most Creative- This category winner was the artwork which shows the most creativity in either theme or medium. The winner of this category will receive a cash prize of $50USD (paid via Paypal) to go towards some new art supplies, goodies from the Fairies and Fantasy website, or whatever they want!

The Winner- Elyn Storath didn’t specify in her entry the mediums her artwork is made in, but to me it looks like pastels over stuck down book pages, which gives a fantastic creative result for this portrait of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde.

Under 18′s- A prize to celebrate younger artists, only entrants under 18 will be eligible for this prize (they will also be eligible for other categories as well). The winner of this category will receive a cash prize of $50USD (paid via Paypal) to go towards some new art supplies, goodies from the Fairies and Fantasy website, or whatever they want!

The Winner- While I do have a soft spot for the Persphone myth, this winning artwork by Lauren Hamlin was chosen for the great technical skill, attention to detail and symbols shown from the myth (flowers, pomegranate) and the entrancing expression on Persephone’s face.

The Winner- This Harry Potter themed artwork by Kate McCredie tickles me, I just had to chose it for the Grand Prize! What a fantastic portrait of Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs.
