Memory’s Wake – The Official Illustrated Companion Guide

It’s been a busy 2015, so busy, that this little gem in my collection never really got the fanfare that it deserved for when it was published back in June. I was looking at it again the other day and feeling I really was quite proud of it. So here I am, giving it a bit of proper spotlight!

It is, of course, “Memory’s Wake – The Official Illustrated Companion Guide”

I designed this book originally with one idea in mind…

What if people who read my story in ebooks want to have a hard copy of all the illustrations from the trilogy?

I wanted to create a book to solve that need. A beautiful collectors item which brings back the memory (teehee) of the story and world and characters.

As I started creating it, it became something more.

I started separating all the illustrations into groups- Characters, Worlds, Magic, Locations. And then I started writing. I chose all of my favourite quotes from the trilogy and included them. I wrote information and backstory on all the elements of the books. I included secret insight into what I was thinking as I wrote this tale. And it all came together into this beautiful celebration of all things Memory’s Wake. I flick through it and I’m instantly taken back into the story, back into the moments and emotions, and back with my characters again.

Here’s a sneak peak at the table of contents-

And here is what it looks like inside-

If you loved Memory’s Wake and want a way to revisit the characters and world again, whether you read on ebook or not, this is a great way to be taken back to Avall again and learn more about it at the same time. You can, of course, get them directly from me, signed, at

If you’re not in Australia like me and want cheaper or faster shipping and don’t mind going without a signature (Pssst! I’m planning on offering nice signed bookplates you can stick in your books-from-other-shops soon!), you can grab the Companion Guide on Amazon at

There is also a slightly cheaper paperback option available there.

Of course, if you haven’t read Memory’s Wake yet and want to speed through the ebooks, you can get the completed trilogy as an ebook box set for around $8 and change at

I wouldn’t recommend reading the Companion Guide before the trilogy itself. It’s FULL of spoilers, nothing held back at all!

Fantasy Coloring – New Book and Calendar!

Coloring is taking over the world, or at least, my studio! I’ve been hard at work creating a new coloring book since releasing my Mermaids collection, and have also got a 2016 coloring calendar available now.

The Color Your Year calendar is on sale right now! With twelve of my artworks to color in, this is a beautiful gift for children to color in and parents to appreciate their kids artwork all year long. Or adults can also enjoy coloring in these detailed artworks. Color them all at once, or work on the calendar one month at a time. At the end of the year the calendar becomes a wonderful keepsake.

And if that’s not enough coloring for you, signed copies of my newest coloring collection, Enchanted, is up for preorder as well. Enchanted features all of my forest themed artworks and is full of fairies, dragons and unicorns. If you want to get your copy ASAP though, you can always grab it on Amazon.

Coloring is for all ages! Mermaid Designs out now.

A new coloring book has finally made its way into my collection!

People are starting to catch onto the truth that coloring in is for all ages, adults too! As an artist, I already knew this 🙂 So I wanted to offer a more complicated and details coloring book, and my mermaids seemed the perfect choice for the collection (all those scales!!).

mermaidcolouring2The Mermaids coloring book includes 25 mermaid designs, and as a bonus there are two sets of those designs, for 50 pages total to spend relaxing time coloring in!

You can find my new Mermaids coloring book on Amazon along with my first coloring book full of fairy and fantasy designs.

Reviews for the final novel are already coming in, and I’m SO HAPPY that people are enjoying it! Seriously, I was freaking out a little. Finishing a story is hard, and I wanted to have a great end to this. The ebook is still on sale until the end of February-

21-year-old Nephilim Scarlett Porter is about to start her Angel training at the infamous Blackbell Academy, so she doesn’t have time to worry about dreams of mysterious dark angels. The last thing she expected was her dream angel to be Dyston Blackbell or that finding her was part of his mission – a mission Dyston is prepared to fail to keep Scarlett and the secret of who she is safe.

But, danger is closer to Dyston and Scarlett than they realize.

War is brewing, led by a group of Nephilim called The Lucifites, and they need The Legend to carry out their plans. With the help of their friends, the two must find the leader of the Lucifites and stop his plans for destruction. But will Dyston and Scarlett’s love survive what’s coming? Lauren McKellar

Lauren writes in contemporary young adult rather than paranormal/fantasy like most of us, but her work was good enough even to tempt me away from my fantasy preferences! I’ve read her book Finding Home and loved it.

The Crazy in Love series covers a group of new adults learning how to live their lives, falling in love and coping with loss. Written with the intention of making you feel, these three books cover the late teen years of Kate and her best friend Stacey—and the whole lot of crazy that can happen when you walk out of those school doors.

THE PROBLEM CRAZY: FREE till January 28:

Stacey Nash

Stacey’s novel Forget Me Not is the last I read, not counting re-reading my own of course! It was a such an intriguing and unique world she’s created around secret magic-like advanced technology. But I have to say I’m absolutely Team Will, and not just because he shares names with my own Will!

The Collective Series follows the journey of seventeen-year-old Anamae Gilbert as she discovers a huge secret that has been kept from the general population. Advanced technology capable of cloaking the human form, teleporting individuals, and allowing people to speak directly into one another’s minds exists and is used around us. Every single day. The head of the hidden organization responsible for this massive cover up sets her in his targets and Anamae struggles to keep herself and her loved ones safe.

Emotionally Charged- Imaginary Cast

While Memory’s Wake is illustrated with my ideas of how the characters might look*, my paranormal romance novella Emotionally Charged doesn’t have any illustrations of the characters. I’ve seen readers and authors around the web sometimes make up imaginary movie casts with actors they think fit the characters, and it seemed like fun!

When emotions give people superpowers, what does love mean?
Read more about Emotionally Charged at

So I’ve decided to “cast” Emotionally Charged. Here are my picks, in order of appearance…

Livvy – Demi Harman

Demi plays Sasha on Home and Away. Since my husband does some post production work for Home and Away I’ve been seeing a lot of it, and think Demi has just the right look for the role of Livvy. A little spoilt, a little vulnerable, but also with enough spunk to take a stand when needed. Sometimes she reminds me of a young Jennifer Connelly (Labyrinth).

Jake – Luke Mitchell

I’m picking cast from Home and Away again! Luke Mitchell plays “Romeo” on Home and Away, and I thought he’d make a great actor for Livvy to crush on. He’s certainly got the face, hair, body… Seriously, there are barely any photos of him available WITH a shirt on.

Emma – Deborah Ann Woll

OK, I’ll admit I’ve got a serious girl crush on Deborah Ann Woll. She’s amazing in True Blood, and is able to play anything from sweet girl-next-door to fiery sex bomb to savage monster. She’s also got that brilliant red hair. Perfect.

Donnie – Michael B Jordan

He’s got the right look for the mysterious, quiet one of the group, with just a little hint of aloof.

Jamie – Jeremy Sumpter

Jeremy Sumpter has that wicked mischievous smile that he put to good use when playing Peter Pan. He’s a bit grown up now, and makes a good fit to play Jake’s younger brother, with a similar look to Luke Mitchell.

Dean – Thomas Decker

He played the tormented role so well in The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and he’s got the right colouring and build for Dean.

What do you think? Did I pick well? Or do you have other suggestions?

*The characters from Memory’s Wake don’t have to look exactly like the illustrations though. I like readers to still imagine the characters for themselves.

Art Books You Should Have

I’m always buying art technique books, always on the look out for some new gem of information hidden within their pages. Even if I get one really solid new tip from each book I consider them a success.

I’ve build up quite a collection by now, but there are just a few that I found the most useful, showing me things in a whole new way, teaching me something I never knew before. I highly recommend these books for any traditional painters, and some for any artists.

Watercolor Made Simple with Claudia Nice

This is a great starting place for any new artist who wants to work in watercolours or any traditional painting medium, but even as a more experienced artist I found this book very useful. It covers all the bases, all the standard tips and tricks (salting, dry brushing, wet in wet etc) plus a few new ones. I found her section on colour theory to be excellent, very practical and understandable.

How to make Watercolor Paint Itself by Nita Engle

This is a brilliant book, which shows an entirely different approach to painting with watercolors. I regularly use techniques from this book, and if it teaches you nothing else, it will help you be more comfortable and experimental with the paint, allowing its natural flow and behaviour work for you rather than against you.

The Simple Secret to Better Painting by Greg Albert

This is an art book that applies to pretty much all schools and mediums of art, because it’s just about composition. As it says “How to Immediately Improve Your Work with the One Rule of Composition”. Here, I’m going to spoil the surprise- the rule is variation, to “Never have two intervals the same”. Of course, that’s the simplified version, and this book delves into how to use spacing, detail and texture, value, hue, and all other elements of a painting to improve your compositions by following this rule. A very interesting and helpful read on an area of art that a lot of artists overlook, or follow instinctively without ever really understanding.

Anatomy for Fantasy Artists by Glen Fabry

A fairly basic but well explained book on anatomy and figure drawing, but all within the fantasy genre- what more could you ask? Since basic anatomy and figure drawing books don’t deal with action poses and more heroic figure proportions as much, this is great for anyone in the fantasy art genre.

Paint Radiant Realism in Watercolour, Ink and Colored Pencil by Sueellen Ross

While I wasn’t particularly keen on the exact methods and style shown in this book, it did lead me to experiment more with other mixed media myself (using watercolour and acrylics together more) and improved my artwork in that way.

Art: A World History

I don’t actually have this book, but it’s the closest I could find on Amazon to the MUCH older book of a similar style I have. I think it’s important as an artist of any kind to have at least a surface knowledge of the eras, fads, and styles of art that have come before, and the artists who’ve made the biggest impacts on art and culture throughout history.
