Irons in the Fire

Irons in the Fire

I’ve been feeling a bit overwhelmed lately. There’s so much going on in my life right now, that something is going to have to give. My to-do list is growing rather than shrinking, and I’m both excited and daunted by it.
It’s my own fault. Too many projects, too many ideas and different things I want to do. So what’s keeping me so busy? What am I working on, and what have I got coming up? Here’s a run down of my life, currently.

The Fairies and Fantasy Business

This is my main bread and butter. The majority of my income is from sales from my store www.fairiesandfantasy.com so it’s a major part of my life. Things slowed down back when the whole global financial crisis first hit, but have been really picking up again and it feels great that so many people are enjoying the products I make! I’m still heavily involved with all parts of the work for F&F, making products and shipping orders.
Unfortunately, I lost my assistant a while ago who used to do the product updates on the site. So I’m sitting on all this new art from myself and my other artists, and just haven’t been able to find the time to get it online and available as products. It’s high on my priorities right now though, so expect to see some new releases soon.
I’m also working with programmers to make some changes to the store to allow more digital download products, which will be a whole new adventure to get started in.
And I’ve started running an Etsy store as well for the dolls and other one of a kind items and close outs, and also been poking around with Zazzle lately too.

And talking about new art, what about painting?

I have both real life and digital folders overflowing with unfinished works that I want to complete. I counted over 200 unfinished works. I was all keen to get stuck into finishing some when my Cinitq up and died on me unexpectedly (my Cintiq is the pressure sensitive screen that I draw on). It’s been off getting repaired and I’m expecting it back any moment now. Once it’s back, I’ll be trying to fit in some more digital painting, and need to do some concept art for an animation project my husband and I are planning to collaborate on. On top of that, I also bought some cute little canvases to do some traditional painting on again, and also have a bug in me to try a bit of photomanipulation art as well. Muse, give me a break!

I also want to paint more dolls.

My DIY Darlings have been so much fun to create. I’ve got a huge list of more designs I want to create for these patterns. More minis sets, more fairies, more mixed race
dolls, more fantasy creatures. I really think that if given the time and energy to promote them, they could be really big! But where do I find the time?

And then on the other end of the creative wheel I’ve got my writing.

It’s like a whole second (or third?) job in terms of time. Even my longest artworks take only a week or two to finish. To write a novel takes months and months, or even years. I have mixed feelings about my writing. I love it and love telling a story, but I worry that exploring a writing career is taking too much time away from my art. But I’m committed now to at the very least complete the Memory’s Wake trilogy. I’ve got one last novel to write for it, then illustrate it too, and that trilogy will be finished. I also have plans to continue the Empath Chronicles series after that is done, but it will be much easier to write for a number of reasons (shorter, not illustrated, simpler storylines, modern world so less world building required, etc).  After those series are complete… I don’t know. I might call it quits and focus on my art again, but I’ve got a few other really cool story concepts that I’d love to write as well. It just takes SO MUCH TIME.

And I only have three days a week.

Thanks to this cheeky little monkey.

Persephone is my main project and where most of my time goes. She’s in daycare three days a week now. And on those three days a week I scramble like crazy to get work done, but it’s hardly enough time for everything. Sephy loves daycare, but I’m not ready to send her for more days yet. She sleeps well, but I barely get through emails in her daytime nap, and in the evenings I try and spend time with my husband since we’re both workaholics and need to just stop and be together sometimes.
Three days a week, and so much to do. No wonder I’m feeling scattered!

  1. All the best for your hectic work hours! Can’t wait for more paintings. I’ll be upset if you stop writing, but you make a valid point concerning how long it takes. And there’s still Providence Unveiled and more Empaths! Good luck!

  2. Hetic Schedule! It’s tough whatever creative career you have, my little craft shop is quiet and I haven’t had time to list new bits, but I’m starting to make again – in between full time work, part time therapist, trying to move and a horrible year.
I started to write too, but this story which I could easily have started 10yrs ago – has not been completed, always something else to do!!
Make sure you take time out though, so important to look after yourself.
Love your artwork, started to have a go at somethings myself, but time and lack of much skill in that area makes it tough! Will keep trying though- love painting, it’s just doing the drawing!

    1. We’re all so busy these days! Always so much to do in so little time. Must just be the human condition 🙂

Selina I’m amazed you can do so much on your own and take care of family too I applaud you you’re doing. A wonderful job good luck with everything, Persephone is adorable and such happy little girl lovely pic of her :):)

  4. Ur daughter is very cute! I love the name Persephone, one of my daughters, her name is Aurora! Yea for the lil goddesses in our life 🙂 I’m also loving your books, can’t wait for more!

    1. So true about them being little goddesses in our life 🙂 I just hope I don’t go crazy overprotective like the original Persephone’s mum 😉

  5. It is hard enough to balance a “9-5” job, but raising a child is a 24-7 job that even when she/he is in daycare, they are not off your mind!
I give you a lot of credit for doing all you do and keeping in perspective that you need to also focus on your husband and getting time for the two of you too!
I think creativity increases when we take a few minutes (even 30) resting, doing yoga, walking, reading, anything that recharges you and clears the clutter from rushing from one task to another. I find it helps me immensely and I hope it does for you too! 🙂
You have a lovely child and do gorgeous work (artistically and in your writing). We are blessed to be able to see the fruits of your labors and appreciate all that you do! (I don’t think you can truly see the full extent of the lives you have touched with beauty).
    Best to you!

    1. I know what you mean about them not being off your mind, even at daycare! My girl is underweight and a fussy eater, so I’m ALWAYS meal planning and cooking for her, even when she’s off at daycare. It takes so much time. Worth it when she eats though 🙂 But some hair gets pulled out when she doesn’t eat!

  6. Wow… That’s going to keep you busy for a while! It is so inspiring how you manage to do it all! And Persephone is looking so gorgeous!

  7. Oh man… I only have 3 days a week too… actually my son’s school changed his schedule without asking me, so this week and next he goes Monday and Friday, and then the two weeks after that Wed-Friday, then Monday and Friday… Argh! I feel the same way. I just can’t get enough done in those 3 days. And my son is also underweight and a fussy eater, lol! I think all he’s eaten for the last 4 days is almond milk and bananas. At least it’s healthy? Buh. I wish you lots of luck getting everything done!

    1. It’s tough isn’t it? Both the time, and the fussy eaters! Sephy goes through phases like that too, where she’ll refuse everything except one random type of food. Fruit is a favourite, particularly if she’s sick she won’y eat anything but fruit. Which is healthy I suppose, but doesn’t help much with gaining weight!
I’ve taken the tactic now of letting Sephy eat whatever I can get her to eat, especially high calorie stuff! She went through a phase were she had chocolate with every meal, and a few meals where she just ate icecream. I pour cream on just about every meal she has and tablespoons of butter. Man, I would LOVE to be able to eat like she does, lol. Of course, I still try and sneak in hidden veges and meat into everything 😉

      1. Haha, I so understand. At first I was really hesitant to let my son have anything sugary or sweet, I wanted him to be healthy. Now I’m like, “you want six cookies? You can HAVE six cookies.” I can’t even eat a slice of bread without gaining five pounds. My son loves fruit too, but like you said, it really doesn’t help much for weight gain. For a while he ate nothing but muffins, and he got kind of chubby, then he went through a growth spurt and he’s skin and bones again. I can’t win!

  8. I’m so inspired Selina, to think you do so much in such a short time and still share so much with us all!
I think it must be a creative thing, our brains just never shut down. I have so many creative things I want to do but not enough time. It’s like there are little pixies at the gates just allowing idea after idea to come through.
Love the shortie version of little Sephy’s name btw 🙂

  9. If you need a hand (from remote access as I am in brisbane) I would be happy to help if possible. Maybe you need another assistant or someone who can come in on the days that Persephone is at daycare. You can work on the creative things while someone else goes through emails and things to prioritise. Do you have someone to take, sort and post orders, etc.
That may help just until the workload settles.
Love your work and outlook on life as well as everything you have overcome.

    1. I used to have an assistant, but when she left I never got around to hiring someone else. I’ve been to busy to find, interview, train etc, even though I know in the long run it will help! It’s a vicious circle really…
